the romney campaign calculated because of the performance that mitt romney put in last night, and keep in mind, you were talking about the adjustments, jessica was talking about the adjustments the president's going to make. i get the sense from talking to several folks inside the romney campaign, and most notably the debate sparring partner himself, rob portman, that they are going to be sticking to this idea, this approach of a tough debate prep, intense debate prep. i think we will be seeing mitt romney going back behind closed doors with rob portman on several occasions over the coming days to make sure he is just as sharp for the next debate. i talked to portman about this last night. he's sort of the debate whisperer now. he said oh, no, his work is not finished until these debates are wrapped up. >> i like that. debate whisperer. fascinating to be a fly on the wall in both debate preps. thanks. >>> digging deeper now, what happened last night, what comes next. our political analyst, david gergen, gloria borger. we've had 24 hours to think about it. the spin the obama campaign ha

did a fabulous job on both the relative basis. comparing mitt romney with performances that we usually see, quite fabulous. on a nominal basis, he did very, very well. i think it is true to say president obama is a superior or turk. i think mitt romney is a better debater. romney, you know, we saw something that we had not seen in a long time. it occurred to me that this reminded me more of the mitt romney i met in 1994 when he was running for the senate and came by and met with me and was incredibly an impressive and analytical and fact driven and pragmatic. this was that guy, not so much the person who had been pretending to be an ideologue for the past few years. obama seemed to be like a team sitting on a lead. i would not have said smog it, i would have just said somebody who did not seem to be terribly hungry for it. -- i would not say smug, just somebody that was not hungry for it. i did not really big in these examples after, i do not particularly care for them. -- these instant polls, i didn't care for them. when you see who did the best job, obama 25, romney 67. obama did bet

to build on the momentum from last night. a country music band will be performing here and mitt romney will be joined by his running mate, paul ryan. let's give a sense of what it was like on the plane as we flew out here on the way out today. we saw mitt romney as loose and as relaxed as we have seen him all campaign. he was all smiles and laughter, joking with his advisers in the front cabin. at one point, the captain came on and said that the denver control tower has congratulated the governor. that of course was met by applause with all the folks sitting by the governor. a top adviser told me the campaign is in a really good mood, but they're going out of their way not to be gloating. one other story from last night, when top supporters and donors were in romney's hotel after the debate for dinner, senator rob portman came by. he was met by applause. as one told us, portman played a better president obama than the president did himself. >> peter alexander traveling with the romney campaign. back over to chuck todd. chuck, same question to you having seen that bizarre development of
